The $3,800 Toilet Leak: Why Sydney Homeowners Should Never Ignore a Running Cistern

One of the most common things we hear when we arrive at a leaking toilet job in Sydney is:
“It’s been doing that for ages.”
Usually, the customer says it while pointing at a toilet that’s been quietly hissing away for months like a snake asleep in the corner of the bathroom.
Sometimes it’s just a worn washer or a faulty inlet valve.
Sometimes it’s a leaking pan seal.
And sometimes it’s the beginning of a very expensive disaster.
Recently, we saw a nearly $3,800 quarterly water bill increase due to a leaking cistern.
Most homeowners don’t realise just how much water a leaking toilet can waste. A cistern leaking only two litres per minute can waste more than 250,000 litres of water over three months.
That’s enough water to fill a decent-sized swimming pool.
All because of a leak many people convince themselves they’ll “get around to later.”
